Basketball Agility Drills (I)

Hello everybody!
We will introduce differents exercises to improve basketball agility drills so you will improve your speed around the court, quickness, co-ordination and most importantly your ability to change direction with minimal deceleration.
Basketball players who excel move with lightening-like speed. But it's not necessarily the athlete who can run a quick 100M time that makes the quickest player.. Much more important in basketball is your ability to rapidly switch between forward, backward, lateral and vertical movements.
Integrating the basketball agility drills below within a speed training program can have a dramatic impact on your game. Not only will you be able to move from one end of the court to another much more quickly, you'll be able to transfer much or all of that energy into other basketball-specific movements.
Super Shuttle:
1. Starting underneath the basket with your back to the court.
2. Shuffle backwards with hands in a defensive ready position to point A.
3. Sprint backwards from A to B focusing on minimizing the time to change direction. 4. Side step facing the court from B to Start position (again keep hands in defensive position).
5. Jump to touch the net or backboard.
6. Repeat the back shuffle from Start to C.
7. Sprint forwards from C to D.
8. Side step with back to court to Start position.
9. Jump to touch the net or backboard.
10. Repeat for 6-8 repetitions with at 60-90 seconds rest between.

image 1. Exercise example

If you use this drill with a team of players, simply stagger the start. So player 2 starts just as player 1 reaches point A. The group can be split into two equal teams at either end of the court. A race makes things more interesting.

Dribble fundamentals

Hi Basketlovers!

Today we are going to learn more about basketball dribble fundamentals.
Dribble is one of the most important fundamentals of offensive basketball, because is the only way that the player move the ball down the court.
Therefore, it is very important that players have to dominate all the secrets about the dribble. As a coach, our task is trying to convert this drill in a natural gesture.

COMMON MISTAKES:
  • Watch the ball while dribbling.
  • Hit it with the palm of the hand.
  • Too loose bouncing
  • Bouncing high.
  • Closed fingers.

USES OF DRIBBLE:
  • Lay-ups.
  • To leave a pressure situation.
  • To change the ball hand, if you can not pass.
  • To improve passing angles.

TYPES OF DRIBBLE:
  • Progression dribble: it is the most used, as it is done continuously as we move down the court.
  • Protection dribble: used to maintain our position before the harassment of a defensive player that prevents us from progressing.
  • Speed dribble: your goal is to move as quickly as possible.
  • Dribble with both hands: you can only give once, it is normally used by pivots to achieve the position of defender.

These are the basic instructions about the dribble. In future posts we'll write about exercises and workouts to improve it. Now... you can enjoy this video of dribbling workout for pro-levels. Maybe one day your players can do this, you think?

Passing fundamentals (I)

In this post we are going to talk about the basketball passing fundamentals. As we know passing remains one of the most under-taught, under-emphasized, and under drilled skill in the game.

Too many players think of passing as something to do when they don't have a shot as opposed to an unselfish act that is designed to include other players. When we are teaching passing it is important that the coach teach not only the skill, but the mentality as well.

Type of passes.

  • Air Pass: the pass don't hit the floor.
  • Bounce Pass: the pass is thrown to the floor so that it bounces to the receiver.

Each type comes with its own variations.
  1. Chest Pass
  2. Bounce Pass
  3. Overhead Pass
  4. Wrap Around Pass
  5. Baseball Pass
  6. Dribble Pass
  7. Behind-the-Back Pass.
  8. Pick and Roll Pass
  9. Bounce Pass

Image 1. Bounce pass.

Teaching points.

The pints of emphasis should be:
  • A good pass is a pass a teammate can catch.
  • When passing, step toward your receiver.
  • When catching, step toward the pass.
  • Follow through on every pass.

Example of exercise to teach passing.

Five-point drill

The five-point basketball passing drill requires the individual to meet the ball, pass quickly, pass accurately, and move to a different position. I like this drill because it is continuous and develops alertness.
Image 2. Passing exercise development

Course of action:

  1. Four players position themselves in a square and ten feet apart and the fifth player gets in the middle.
  2. The middle player, with a basketball, starts the drill by passing to any player, then taking that player’s place.
  3. The receiver of the basketball passes to either the player to the left or to the right, and taking that player’s plac
  4. The second receiver passes across the square to the player on the opposite corner and takes that player’s place.
  5. The third receiver passes to the player to his right or left and takes that player’s place.
  6. This drill continues in this manner with the basketball moving across (corner to corner), a side pass, corner to corner, a side pass, etc.
  7. After players become well accustomed to this passing drill, add variations such as having each receiver to fake a pass before passing the basketball.

That's all for today. Hope that we'd helped you on your teaching passing task.  On next posts we'll keep working on this and other skills (shooting, dribbling, etc).

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT. YOUR FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED.

History about federations

Hi guys!

In this post we are going to talk about the history of the differents basketball federations.

We highlight the federations more importants, for example: FIBA (Federation International Basketball), NBA (National Basketball Association) and FEB (Federación Española de Baloncesto).

The FIBA (Federation International Basketball) is an association of national organizations wich governs international competition in bastektball. This association was founded in Geneva in 1932. Two years after, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially recognized basketball

The NBA (National Basketball Association) was founded in New York City on June 1946. The first name was Basketball Association of America (BAA), but on August 1949 was merged with the rival National Basketball League (NBL).         The FEB (Federación Española de Baloncesto) was founded on July 1923 in Barcelona and the first president was Fidel Bricall. Is the agency that manages the basketball in Spain. In Spain, the basketball is organized similarly to most European countries and FIBA. Also, there is a league of professional club managed by the ACB as first class and other divisions or ranks are organized by the FEB.
